TECHNOLOGY BOOST IN PUBILC SPACE

BACKGROUND

This project is required to design for connecting people through technology and community engagement in public space. The aim of the proposal is to promote public connection activities and experiences through technology in daily lives.

RESEARCHES, PROPOSAL & INSPIRATION

After research on the technology, I found a semi-humanoid, Pepper that was designed with the ability to read emotions. Its curvy design ensures dangerous-free use and a high level of acceptance of users.

Due to the site being located in a crowded area with a huge population, there would receive many visitors from different cultures, different languages and different ages every day. Fortunately, Pepper is having well abilities showing at it can speak up to 21 languages and provide translation services. In addition, it is also having some basic medical knowledge in order to take action when urgent cases happened. Based on its abilities, I reckon that it is suitable to be applied in the space as the main character.

I then studied the joints and common materials that have been used in a temporary structure. According to the study, I decided to use joints such as dowels, different types of steel joints, hinge and so on.

When people first enter the site, they will need to register before starting all the activities in order to ensure the good condition of Pepper after use. Next to it is the area for storing Pepper and it would also be an exhibition area during the daytime. Over again in the gaming area which encourage strangers to play together with Pepper and it could seem like an ice-breaking part. People are then encouraged to enjoy sharing communication after playing games. The is an exit door beside the bench in order to let people leave easily and make the flow more smoothly.
