ID SPACE | SESSION APR2019
BACKGROUND
DESIGNING A LIMITED SINGLE LIVING SPACE
Inflated land values and the cost of renting in the city centre are excluding those who are vital to the vibrancy and vitality of the city, such as young professionals and key workers. This, coupled with the fact that most residents consider a central location to be more important than a large amount of space, is contributing to the inflation of land values. The housing shortage in cities may therefore be one of the crises the country will need to face in the future, and there is an urgent need for us as interior designers to address the serious lack of quality and affordable housing, especially for city dwellers, and to promote micro-living as a lifestyle choice.
Therefore, this task is about designing a 3m(w) x 3m(d) x 5m(h) compact living space for a specific user. I focused on the single ladies who recently come to the city centre of Malaysia for university and would like to live alone with a pet cat. Therefore, for the purpose of studying the target user and let the design more reasonable, a typical female university student is used as a reference persona had been done.

SPACE REQUIREMENT
Based on the persona and the limitation of space, there are some equipment and inspirations had been studied such as the folding bed sofa, hidden storage under the bed, folding table, washing machine designed on top of the toilet bowl.

According to the persona, the owner is a girl who enjoys staying alone with her cat. Therefore, the entire project would more focus on her and her pet cat but rarely focus on visitors. In this case, the entire space is designed more on a private area. The ground floor is included an entrance, living room, sleeping area, working area, cat activities area, little kitchen, and washroom with a washing machine as well. Up to the mezzanine floor, it is a private dressing room due to considering that the owner might need a larger space for storing her clothes and beauty staff.
