Background

The professor played a piece of music without lyrics in class and we were asked to close our eyes to catch the feeling better and we needed to come out with models according to the feeling inspirited by what we heard.

It was a confusing song like it is full of pressure, the feeling was just like many things are pressing the protagonist and he might need a corner to stay alone. So, I imagined that there is a refuge that could let him protect himself from hurt from the outside world. In my imagination, it wasn't a space that was exactly fully enclosed since he couldn't escape from the pressure but also can be looked at the scenery and stabilize his emotion. So, I tried to make the model by exploring with different materials such as bending the wire and finally became a human head composed of chaos. I also tried to subtract some lines from the paper for leaving slits and glued both ends of the paper together to make it like protection in the circle. I even tried to stack wooden sticks together into a triangle like a separation wall but remain an opening on top.

The music seems like the protagonist’s head is in a muddle, like he was suddenly losing the ability of thinking. So, I tried to make something looks very messy and confusing by cutting the paper into the strip and shaping them in curves. I even tried to play with the lighting and its shadow to express the protagonist‘s gloominess.

Meanwhile, the music also made me feel like everything was mixed up together and make people feel suffocated. So, I tried to use a black colour ribbon to tie some white colour plastic sticks together. While black ribbon represented the invisible force and white plastic sticks with sharp tail ends represented they can be anything that would hurt the protagonist.

This is followed by a more undulating section, like the climax of the piece and the emotion of the protagonist was continually going up and down like he was struggling deep inside him. So, I tried to make something up and down by cutting a piece of paper and folded. The outcome seems like the piano key was being pressed and making noise.

The music comes to an end and it gradually calms down, as if the protagonist's emotions have gradually settled down, with expectations and promises for the future. The sad and desperate protagonist hopes that the bad things aren’t the fact. So, I made a model which looks down from the top view, it seems like a star in the sky, which also means hope. While from other angles, the hollo with holes seems like the protagonist who has been through the ordeal and is covered in wounds.
