BACKGROUND

17 Goals for People, for Planet | The Sustainable Development Goals are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere. I had chosen one out of 17 goals which are SDG 05: GENDER EQUALITY and begin my investigation.

Nowadays, we still can find the problem of gender inequality in any corner of the world. Thus, this project is an experience centre for United Nations’ 2030 Agenda based on SDG05: Gender Equality.

Among the problems of gender equality, the most common and serious problem is child trafficking. Thus, in this project, I will mainly focus on the child trafficking issue.

ISSUE

People are being treated inequality because of the SOCIETAL MINDSET.

• No matter men or women can be excitation and be encouraged in our centre.

• Encourage the public to give supports and help.

CONCEPT MINDMAP

CONCEPT

My CONCEPT title is AN UNATTAINABLE HORIZON, is to create a space to increase awareness through experience and enhance the ability of self-protection. And at the end, girls can protect themselves and their rights.

In this concept, "HORIZON" means the time before and also a ray of hope in their heart. Once the victims are trafficked, they are burdened with debt for the rest of their lives and many of them will feel that there is no end in sight. So, in this concept, horizon also means the time before. Because the horizon is always there, they might want to get to it, to go back to the happy day before but they never will. It's all about the unattainable as the time before is already too far for them.

And why am I saying that the horizon also means a ray of hope in their heart, it's because they always want to get help from any but no one is willing to help them. So, they give themselves hope even though they know that it's out of reach but it's hard to give up.

CONCEPT ELEMENT

DAWN - In Mandarin, it does not only mean the first appearance of light in the sky before sunrise but also means hope and a bright future. The victims are suffering. The hope hasn't come yet, but they hope to be saved. As the hope in their hearts and the dawn is the same because we can see both of them but can’t touch or hold them in hand.

TARGET USER

Basically, my target users are parents, researchers, children and students, and those women who would like to get a job but they are unable to reach the high required today.

PARTNERSHIP

1. SUKA Society

A children's welfare NGO that advocates for and empowers children and the youth in Malaysia. People could volunteer their efforts in various ways – as a teacher at a refugee community-based learning centre, assist in creating child advocacy materials, or join them at the women and children government protection shelter to help trafficked survivors put their difficult experiences behind them.

Here, due to lots of child trafficking cases are caused by parents not taking this issue seriously and children do have not enough awareness and power to protect themselves.

So, I would like to run a self-defence workshop together with the SUKA Society. Besides, I hope that they can hand the artworks done by our visitors over to the survivor as support.

2. JOBSTREET

One of the leading internet recruitment sites in the Asia-Pacific. I would like to work with them to provide lower required job opportunities for those women who are unable to achieve the high required jobs nowadays.

I tried to sketch the element. I use the cave as my inspiration because inside the cave is dark like when the victims are being trafficked, Most of them are locked up in a dark room. The sun shining in from the mouth of the cave is like the hope in their heart.

And when I'm sketching, I suddenly thought of wave-particle duality. It's basically talking about when the light comes through this way, the wave will overlap and the distance between will become bigger and bigger.

MODEL

I try to play with the lighting. So, we can see that from the background, the model, and the modelling board, the light becomes linear.

Once people enter this centre, the reception counter will be shown. On top of the counter is a skylight which could let the natural lighting shine in.

To support women’s autonomy, we work with JobStreet to provide women with lower employment opportunities. And there are 3 job hunting columns to help them.

Visitors have to pick a headset and scan the barcode before all the experience activities. Thus, they can enjoy the audio tour anywhere.

Global information will be updated in real-time in this area. And next to it is a missing girl column.

The story would be outlined with 5 sensories in a dark environment. As the Darkness magnifies the senses and the immersive experiences arouse empathy. The experiences won't be disturbed by other users as all of the users would put on the headset which they pick at the beginning. When users get to certain points, the voice would play automatically in their headset. At the same time, they can use their phone to catch the message in their phone through AR technology.

Here is lend a hand area. People can choose to share their supports by doing artwork and giving it to the survivors. Besides, they also can choose to be volunteers or donate money.

There is also a self-defence workshop to enhance the ability of self-protection. It has applied a lot of openings that allow the natural lighting to shine in. The natural lighting is to represent the hope to shine into the dark and direct them to move on to a better life.

Apart from the workshop’s operation hours, here will temporarily become an exhibition area. All of the artworks that show in the exhibition are made by visitors at the lend a hand area. After the exhibition session, the artworks will be received by the victims as an empowerment gift.
